Tank and Tankless Water Heaters. Which is Right For You?

San Antonio, TX, homeowners have two options for water heating. There are traditional hot water storage tanks, and there are tankless water heaters. Here’s a rundown of the benefits and drawbacks of each option:

How Water Storage Tanks Work

Forty-gallon storage tanks supply enough hot water for three consecutive showers. After heated water is depleted, it takes almost an hour to produce more.

If hot water is being used elsewhere in the house while the consecutive showers are underway, the supply of hot water will be long gone before the showers are completed.

How Tankless Water Heaters Work

A high-powered burner heats water almost instantly as that water passes through a heat exchanger and exits through the tap. Tankless units and storage tanks are powered by electricity or gas.

Why Tankless Units Are Different

Hot water storage tanks can keep up to 50 gallons of hot water on permanent standby. Tankless units can produce two or three gallons of hot water per minute.

What About Energy Efficiency?

Efficiency depends, in part, on how much hot water you use. If you have a tankless unit and use under 41 gallons of hot water per day, energy efficiency can increase by 34 percent compared to storage tanks.

If you exceed 85 gallons per day, a tankless unit could save you an additional 14 percent over a storage tank. However, it has a higher upfront cost than a storage unit.

Your daily demand for hot water may exceed the capacity of a single tankless unit. Some families install two. Large households might hire professional plumbers to install tankless units at a few locations including smaller units at taps.
